It almost turned into an Oldcastle v. Dunderry shoot out in Tuesday’s second Regional Football Championship encounter under the Dunganny lights. Guaranteeing that at least half of the new competition’s final four will be representing the north of the county.
Davy Nelson’s side dug and poured the foundations for their success in first half, at the end of which those from Ballinlough, Moylagh, Oldcastle and St Brigid’s led by 2-09 to 0-03. The goals coming courtesy of a Pearse Sheridan penalty and a Jason Scully effort after a neat passing move.
Bare facts would say the new competition has been a disappointing one for Darnley, but sometimes you have delve a bit deeper than the headline to get the full story. Thus, a fine individual goal by Dunderry’s Stephen Coogan and four points on the spin – three from the very accurate boot of the aforementioned and one from substitute Emmet Costello were worthy of mention.
As has to be said of the efforts of others such as Sean Brennan, Conor Dempsey, Hugh Staunton and Aaron Newman throughout the group stages. Ultimately, though, goals are the greatest currency in football and Oldcastle’s Ronan Maguire bagged his side’s third ‘Major’ it sealed the result which the north county outfit’s performances on the night and throughout the group stages of the competition deserved.
