Man charged with murder of Ashling Murphy

A Slovakian national in his 30s was tonight charged with the murder of 23-year-old Ashling Murphy in Tullamore last Wednesday afternoon.

Jozef Puska, 31, with an address in the Tullamore area, replied “No” when arrested, charged and placed under arrest and caution by Det. Sgt. David Scahill.

Ms. Murphy, a teacher, camogie player and traditional Irish musician, was set upon and attacked in the Cappincur area around 4pm on January 12th last.

The heinous, unprovoked slaying in broad daylight shook the nation like few I can remember during my lifetime. A tagline which became the chant of unity between those engulfed by fear and revulsion at the crime most likely encapsulated the all consuming disbelief “She was going for a run”.

Since Ashling’s death, sporting events and every other walk of life have held vigils, moments of silence before events and deployed many other marks of respect to the deceased and her family.

A considerable crowd congregated in Offaly’s county town as the accused was brought to and from court. The accused was remanded in custody for a week to Clover Hill Prison. Ashling Murphy was laid to rest on Tuesday after a funeral attended by both An Taoiseach and President Higgins.
