Trim (Meath)…1-11
St Faithleach’s (Roscommon)…0-11
Sixty years ago, Peter Darby lifted the Keegan Cup as Trim sat atop the pile within the realms of Meath football. The town town club have endured many peaks and troughs in the intervening half century and more. They were defeated in Meath SFC Finals in 1997 and 2002 and in the years which followed actually lost their seat at football’s top table in the county.
However, regardless of whatever else may have been going on, two trends have abided throughout the years – the red and whites have remained a stronghold of hurling in the county whilst at the same time continuing to produce top class footballers who have gone on to represent Meath teams with distinction and enjoy glittering careers in green and gold.

Now, under the guidance of former Meath and Ireland full back Kevin Reilly, they are on their way back. Having defeated Oldcastle to claim the Meath IFC and overcome Offaly’s Clara to reign supreme in Leinster. today the Navan O’Mahony’s clubman saw his charges produce a commanding second half performance to earn themselves an All Ireland Final berth and an outing in Croke Park.
Though the sides were deadlocked at the interval, 0-05 each, the Connacht side – who had Roscommon’s two best players, Ciaran and Diarmuid Murtagh, in their ranks, were never able to bridge the chasm between the sides once the Meath representatives’ main marksman Aaron Lynch netted a penalty ten minutes into the second half.
In some ways, these are exciting optimistic, exciting times for Meath GAA, among those will be back contesting the most prized possession in Meath football in 2022, look out for the likes of Luke Moran and Ciaran Caulfield and Conor Quigley and the aforementioned Lynch when they do their thing in GAA HQ very soon. They are names you will be hearing more of.
