BREAKING NEWS
Grand National and Gold Cup winning jockey, Robbie Power from Moynalvey, has announced he will retire from race riding at the end of tomorrow (Friday) evening’s card at Punchestown.
The son of former champion show jumper Captain Con Power, the man affectionately know as Puppy first came to prominence when partnering the Gordon Elliott-trained Silver Birch to win the Aintree Grand National in 2007. A landmark success for the trainer at the time also.

Thereafter, the 41-year-old was based for a period with the late, great Paddy Mullins – for whom he enjoyed some notable successes aboard the gifted mare Asian Maze – before he became predominantly attached to the Jessica Harrington yard. Mrs Harrington is, of course, a member of the Fowler family, near neighbours of the Powers at Rahinstown, Summerhill.
From her Commonstown Stud base in Moone, Co Kildare, the jockey garnered Cheltenham Gold Cup glory aboard Sizing John and Irish Grand National success in partnership with Our Duke. Through his association with Ann And Alan Potts Ltd he also enjoyed a successful spell with the Colin Tizzard team, for whom he recorded noteworthy victories in tandem with horses such as Lostintranslation, Reserve Tank and Slate House.
However, the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic saw Power bring his association with the former dairy farmer to an end, upon which he resumed his primary role with the Harrington yard as well as being the pilot of choice for Brian Acheson’s Robcour operation. How fitting it will be, then, if the Corkman’s Magic Daze does indeed turn out to be his final winner it would be most apt.
