Lenihan revives Dunboyne Riverside connection

Republic Of Ireland defender Darragh Lenihan has completed his transfer from Blackburn Rovers to fellow Championship hopefuls Middlesbrough.

While the 28-year-old’s decision to leave Ewood Park – where he had been club Captain – might raise a few eyebrows, it’s clear Rovers didn’t appreciate the asset they had on their books.

Plenty of others did, though, and the only surprise is that none of the Premier League clubs came calling. Having said that, the move represents an astute move for the Dunboyne man as he strives to maintain his current appeal to Irish boss Stephen Kenny.

Darragh wears the ‘Boro kit for the first time

Under the guidance of the affable Chris Wilder, the big centre half – who this writer suspects would be equally as adept further out the field – joins a club with genuine and merited aspirations of graduating to the top division sooner rather than later.

Incidentally, not only does Darragh’s decision to redeploy to Weirside revive the Dunboyne connection with the Riverside Stadium – Ger Robinson having donned the red and white in 1998 when Bryan Robson was manager – it caps a great week for people with Dunboyne connections experiencing career advancment.

Coming as it does after Josh Keeley’s move from St Patrick’s Athletic to Spurs was confirmed and his former schoolmate Jake Verschoyle was named in the Irish U-20 basketball squad for the European Championships next month in Georgia. And that’s without even mentioning the Meath lady footballers!
