The chances of Erik ten Hag guiding Manchester United to silverware in his first season in charge still look decent after the Old Trafford club were pitted against Charlton Athletic at the third last hurdle in the Caraboa Cup.

Goals from Christian Erikssen and Marcus Rashford eased an experienced looking line up past Vincent Kompany’s Burnley while, tonight, the Belgian’s former employers on the other side of Manchester overcame Liverpool thanks to a goal from the underrated Nathan Ake.
