Midweek dead rubber fixture cancelled

The scheduled Bord Na Mona O’Byrne Cup third round encounter between Wexford and Louth – slated for Hollymount in the South East – has been cancelled as it would have transpired to be meaningless.

By virtue of their victories over Westmeath and Kildare, Mickey Harte’s men had already qualified for a last four face off against either Dublin or Offaly – who are due to meet on Wednesday night also – while, conversely, Wexford would have had nothing to play for following two defeats.

While from a logistical point of view, the decision not to let the match slide makes sense, this corner would have a few slight reservations about the development. Firstly that, at this time of the year, every team needs every bit of game time they can get and secondly, you’d hope that a precedent hasn’t been set by calling this one off.
