BREAKING NEWS
The transfer window in football is nearly closed again until midsummer, but even if it were to open indefinitely it’s unlikely it would throw up a story as sensational as that which is breaking in F1 this morning – the impending acquisition of the services of Lewis Hamilton by Ferrari.
While everyone with even the slightest interest in or knowledge of the lightening fast action – with the possible exception of Toto and Susie Wolffe – would accept there has been a notable diminishment in the productivity of the Mercedes team over the last year or more, to see the multiply crowned World Champion jump ship at this late stage in his career is still a surprising turn of events.

In one sense. From another viewpoint, however, given the obvious drop off in competitiveness at Merc, a serial winner and voracious competitor like Hamilton was always likely to look further afield. Especially when placed against the backdrop of the consummate ease with which Max Verstappen and Red Bull have won the Drivers and Constructors Championships respectively in recent seasons.
That said, the Italian giants haven’t exactly been setting the world alight either, by their exorbitantly high standards. so you can see from their perspective how attractive the proposition of recruiting the most gifted driver on the circuit would be. After all, it’s not all that long ago that Toto’s great rival, Christian Horner of Red Bull, was reportedly canvassing the services of Driver No. 44.
It’s indicative of the influence Hamilton still commands within his sport that, even at this late stage in his career the main players in the sport still coveting his signature. Which has now led to next season being already more talked about than the one which is only weeks away!
