MEATH vs. LOUTH

1. SEAN BRENNAN

With every outing, the Dunderry clubman is looking more assured and commanding of his domain. His latest outing proving that yes, he has the size and strength to dominate the square but also the agility and acumen to get down and pull off a string of vital saves when Meath backsides were dangling dangerously close to the bacon slicer.

2. GIVE MATHEW COSTELLO A FREE ROLE

Many moons ago, I wrote a piece in which the earnestly held view was expressed that Barry Regan from Navan O’Mahony’s looked to be the prodigious potential footballing talent seen in the county since one T. Giles was a Minor. For whatever reason, ‘Buck’ never did hit the heights which seemed possible but the current county vice captain appears very much Trevor-esque in his burgeoning career to date.

His astounding pace and superlative football intellect leave him in a position that he can take and make scores from any part of the field.

3. MEATH DEFENCE

Brennan, of course, is co-opted into this bracket also. However, the sextet in front of him showed guile, guts and cohesion which – in terms of the unit as a whole – belied belied their low mileage working together.

Dunboyne’s Mick Murphy is a newcomer to the Meath defence

From the time Colm took over as manager, Sean Boylan’s imprint has been all over Meath’s defencive structure. Players, regardless of jersey numbers, hunting in packs with the ferocity of worker bees in pursuance of effecting turnovers and more often than not succeeding in doing so.

4. THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT

Elsewhere in the local media in recent days, mention was made of the fact that it was brilliant to see the hordes of kids back out on the Pairc Tailteann sod at half time on Sunday and I would 100℅ concur with those sentiments.

Now, in no way would I seek to pour a dampner on what’s a wonderful spectacle, but, if there is one drawback to the glorious scene it’s the fact that the Meath subs generally try to have a bit of a kick around/warm up during the break.

No, not for a second would doing the kids out of their outing on our hallowed turf be contemplated, but, the lads are entitled to do their warm and in fact need to do so.

Surely it wouldn’t make that much of a difference if they were to do their thing on the pitch at the back of stand. The kids are alright.
