Following another hectic weekend’s action which saw the last round of the regulation fixtures in adult football championships in Meath, the runners and riders for the last eight in the races for the Keegan (SFC) and Mattie McDonnell Cup(s) – Meath IFC – are now declared.
Having survived an almighty scare against Donaghmore/Ashbourne on Saturday evening, Keegan holders Summerhill will take on St Peter’s, Dunboyne who themselves will have to go up several gears if they are to get near troubling the reigning and defending kingpins.
Undoubtedly the pick of the ties though is the clash of Ratoath and Dunshaughlin. When the neighbours collided at the same junction last term, they were infamoysly deadlocked at 0-01 each half way through before a hotly disputed goal squeezed the blue and gold through.
It’s another local derby in quarter final three as Simonstown Gaels and Wolfe Tones lock horns once more. Both of these would have been considered to be in transition, but some characters whose only remaining transition will be to the pipe and slippers – Robbie Burlingham, Sean Tobin and Podge McKeever on one side, Stephen Sheppard, Alan Callaghan and Cian Ward on the other, have confounded all opinions and will prove a stern test for each other and/or anybody else.
The final last eight joust, then, pits redoubtable, obdurate Skryne against a St Colmcille’s side bubbling with so much raw talent that some day the lid will blow and they’ll give someone an awful roasting. For now though, toss a coin.
