MAYNOOTH UNIVERSITY… 2-09
ST MARY’S BELFAST… 1-07
Newly appointed Meath senior football captain Eoghan Frayne kicked a handful of points as Maynooth University withstood a spirited rally from the northern teaching college before advancing to the knockout stages of the Sigerson Cup.
Played on the Kildare university’s North Campus, early on it looked as if it was going to be a canter for the home side when a ‘major’ from burgeoning Luke Crowley, three points from Frayne, two from Harry Plunkett and one apiece from Conor Gray and Paddy McDermott left Adrian Minnock’s charges charges clear by 1-07 to 0-03 at the turnover.

It transpired that Frayne accounted for his team’s only two second half points as the Belfast boys put 1-04 on their hosts before a goal from James Harris of Castlemitchell – club of the great Christy Byrne – settled the issue.
