Returning Regan right on time to rescue Royals

MEATH… 2-12

DONEGAL… 1-14

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Meath hurling folk were left to ponder what they were missing last term as three points in injury time from the outstanding Jack Regan got Johnny Greville’s tenure away to a winning beginning in wintry Trim.

A trademark coralling of possession, powerful run and bullet finish to the net from Cian Rogers gave Meath a cushion early on but a converted penalty and quick point from the north westerner’s custodian Luke White swung the pendulum their way.

Jack Regan came up trumps once again for Meath

By half time, however, Greville’s gang had chipped away and etched out a 1-07 to 1-06 buffer for themselves. Though you did wonder was it going to be enough for them as the men from the Hills would have whatever gains were to be had from the stormy elements thereafter.

When Regan bagged the Royals second major, you could be forgiven for thinking that was case closed. But instead, a phalanx of points from Brian McIntyre and Gerard Gilmore appeared to have a shock away victory primed to kick in.

Not for the first time, though, this group of Meath stickmen drilled into the reserves of character for which the county’s teams are famed. The culmination of which was Regan’s triple riposte which just about kept the points in the locality.
