As with all other facets of the GAA, club action on the Meath camogie scene is almost under starters orders, with the action throwing in on August 24th.
At Senior level, Na Fianna will be hoping to make it a hat-trick of county titles on the spin and indeed to repeat the heroics of a couple of seasons ago when they made it all the way to an All Ireland Club Final.
Indeed, they may well have won on that Croke Park occasion if they were given any modicum of fair play from either the Camogie Association or the LGFA. Instead of the Enfield-Baconstown combination having to play All Ireland semi finals in both codes within less than 24 hours of each other.
If they get the opportunity, they will surely want to right that wrong and will look to Sophia Payne, Claire Coffey, Leah Devine, Aedin Slattery, Aoife Carey and possibly county footballer Kerrie Cole to spearhead doing so.
However, you can be sure that the aristocrats of Meath camogie in the modern era, Kilmessan, will have designs on calling a halt to the combibation’s gallop. Many of their hopes will rest with players like Tracey King, Laura and Rachel O’Neill and possibly county football star Megan Thynne and the ageless Aileen Donnelly to help them do so.
Mind you, in a glowing endorsement of the growing popularity and development of the game in the county that the SCC can no longer be pigeon holed as a two horse race as others such as Ratoath, Boardsmill and Killyon have also assembled fine, competitive playing pools.
Turning attention to the Intermediate Camogie Championship, St Peter’s, Dunboyne will look to Maeve Clince, Ellen Burke, Ellie McGovern and Dearbhla Curran to drive their mission to atone for last year’s final defeat against Navan O’Mahonys in Batterstown.
