Meath put first dent in Deise title tilt

Orla Finnegan’s sixth minute ‘major’ ultimately proved the decisive factor as travelling Meath put the first dent in Waterford’s Lidl NFL title ambitions in Dungarvan on Sunday afternoon. The result of which was, consequently, that Wayne Freeman’s team re-ignited their own ambitions of reaching the same fixture in a few weeks time.

Finnegan’s fine finish came about on the back of brilliant approach work by Skryne’s Ciara Smyth, before Rachel Casserly and Meadhbh Byrne tagged on points which left the visitors ahead by 1-06 to 0-05 at the change ends.

Meadhbh Byrne contributed three crucial points when introduced in Dungarvan.

As the score line subsequent to that would suggest, the locals did indeed have the upper hand for the majority of the second half but after a heroic block by the soon-to-depart Mary Kate Lynch, the introduced Byrne notched her third score of the day to put up a safety net around the resolute Royals as they hung on for a deserved win.
