Meath repel Mayo spirit to maintain promotion hopes

MEATH… 0-20

MAYO… 1-12

With those considered to be the strongest teams in the division, Laois and Kerry still on their ‘to do’ list, Meath certainly won’t be getting ahead of themselves. At the same time, though, they can only deal with what’s in front of them on a given day.

To that end, most of the heavy lifting pertaining to Saturday’s shift at Adrian Freeman Park in Tooreen was executed in the first half. By the end of which those sporting their flashy new away kit for the first time led by 0-16 to 0-03.

Now, akin to the footballers against Louth a few weeks back, the point could be made that there was a marked reduction in productivity from the visitors after the short whistle, but, in fairness to them, they withstood what was, it must be said, a typically spirited Mayo revival and, essentially, found the few scores to close out the deal and – regardless of what happens elsewhere – kept up their own end of the bargain.

Scorers – T. Shine (0-9, 5F, 1×65), M. Levey (0-4), M. Cole (0-3), D. Shine, E. Donegan, L. Byrne and S. Doyle (0-1 each).
