There was something poignantly fitting about Meath advancing to the semi final of the Glen Dimplex All Ireland Intermediate Camogie Championship as news broke of the passing of the founder of competition sponsor Dr Martin Naughton of Stackallen House, Rathkenny.
For Stephen Shiel’s team, it was a case of another lodgement in the credit column of their enduring rivalry with the Oak Leaf County.
What’s more, the result went some way to redressing the lack of luck Meath have had in Pairc Gratton in Inniskeen in recent seasons.
Even though it was the Ulster side which had the better of things early on with Ciara Collins and Cliodhna Ni Mainin doing most of the damage for the red and white as they led by 0-06 to 0-08 at the break.
In previewing the fixture on Sunday morning, I mentioned how much of a boost the return of Aoife Minogue has been for Meath. A fact underscored in bold when the Dunderry woman pointed three ’45’s – camogie’s answer to a ’65’ in hurling.
Roisin Heaney also sent over some imperious scores with Leah Devine, Ellen Burke and Emma Regan also on target as the winners secured their spot in a semi final against Antrim in two weeks time.
