While a lot of places were agog with talk about solar eclipses, astrology and the likes and a few bored souls switched the indignation metre to uber righteous because a few kids wanted to get selfies and/or autographs during a once in a lifetime opportunity in Croke Park, the Minor footballers of Dunboyne and Moynalvey had a right good go at shooting whatever light was in the sky out of it.
That’s not entirely a euphemism either as, by the time the second half of a cracking double header on the Rooske Road, solar eclipse or not, there wasn’t a whole pile of light left anywhere.
On an occasion where the sides shared as many goals as the eventually vanquished ended up with points, the locals lad by 3-06 to 2-06 at the interval. Nine scores to eight.
However, even though it was tighter still – six scores apiece – after the resumption but the fact that half on Dunboyne’s haul were ‘majors’ ultimately proved the deciding factor in a brilliant encounter.
Wing forward Lucas Kelly took the scoring honours for Dunboyne with 2-3, Jack Gallagher took the household’s contribution to the evening’s business to 0-10 after older brother Charlie’s half dozen in the other match, but, it was substitute James Sheahan’s green flag which eventually ensured the green light for victory.
