Condescending ignorance is not passionate defence

Some people just can’t help themselves. Just as certain individuals should never end up in certain positions, but due to their inflated valuation by others do so. Now read on…

No secret has ever been made of the admiration there is for Donal Og Cusack in this seat. Only in some ways, mind you. His standing as a hurler and as an advocate on certain issues is beyond doubt. Or at least it was, until last Friday. Nobody could quibble about him passionately espousing all things hurling. But condescending ignorance is not passionate defence of the game he, and we all, love.

It’s exactly what it says on the tin – ignorance. To describe the Tailteann Cup – and the counties partaking therein – as “A Grand National for also rans” was nothing short of shameful, arrogant, grandiose classism. Would he say the same about the McDonagh, Ring, Rackard and Meagher Cup competitions in hurling? He would in my… Backside.

Don’t get me wrong, I feel he was dead right with regard to GAAGo/broadcasting etc. But, looking at the bigger picture, Donal Og needs to wind his neck in. As does whoever gives him so much airtime.
