The best goalkeeper in Ladies Football for the past decade, Monica McGuirk, is wholly deserving of the latest honour bestowed upon her after it was announced that the vastly experienced netminder had been appointed Royal County captain by new Meath manager Shane McCormack.
The Duleek-Bellewstown clubwoman has been one of the cornerstones upon which Meath’s transformation in the game for the better part of the last decade was built upon and has proven herself to be a leader in every sense of the word.

Monica has some rather large footsteps in which to follow as Meath have been led successfully in the recent past by both Maire O’Shaughnessy and Shauna Ennis. There’s no doubt the last year was one of frustration and disappointment for our lady footballers but I believe the glass is still half full.
Granted, Vikki Wall throwing her lot in with the Irish 7s Rugby outfit is another blow they could’ve done without but if some of the other absentees of recent years were to return to the fold, the girls in green would still appear to be well placed to be genuine contenders once again.
