The bite of a dying snake? Hold that thought…

Isn’t it amazing the amount of old sayings we inherit from those who went before us which still carry relevance to this day? For example: “A wet and windy May fills the haggard full of corn”, “Make hay while the sun shines” or “Kill two birds with the one stone”. With a derelict house and consequently high grass beside the home place when I was growing up, “Beware the sting of a dying wasp” was one often imparted in this direction. Believe me, there were plenty of occasions on which one wasn’t aware enough and thus has the war wounds to prove it. Now read on…

Prior to the commencement of the current incarnation of the Paddy Power World Darts Championship, currently in progress, there were many, including this observer in all honesty, who felt we may be about to witness the bite of dying snake – Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright to be exact – but we may just have to hold that thought.

Peter Wright’s class doesn’t need further elaboration

Because the ever colourful, gnarly Scot produced his best display on an oche for quite possibly years in producing what must be considered a surprising victory over Wesley Plaiseir of The Netherlands.

Describing Wright’s victory as such does indeed feel strange given the flambuoyant tungsten tosser’s glittering CV at the Ally Pally, but it’s a reality given the malaise the mowhawked maestro has seen his game slip into in the recent to medium term past.

However, the hope would be that, to use a bit of horse racing parlance, having got his head in front, Snakey may, in fact, kick on and go on a bit of a run.

One performer who won’t, sadly be going on an odyssey this time around is Fallon Sherrock after the bespeckled blonde fell foul of  the same shortcomings which afflicted both her partner Cameron Menzies and our own Keane Barry.

That is to say, creating a grain bucket full of chances but only getting a pitiful yield from all the effort put in when measured as a percentage of chances at double converted compared to created.

Mind you, though it’s likely to be scant consolation presently, whoever did lose the encounter (Miekle v. Sherrock) probably did dodge a bullet in that Miekle will most likely get Nuke’d next time out!
