One of the many great things about leading a life which, to the largest extent, revolves around sport – almost any sport – means you’re never short of something to watch or scribe about.
However, gut feeling suggests this corner may not be alone in getting hard to zone in on the ongoing travelling circus that is World Cup 2026. Why exactly I’m not sure.
Maybe because there are so many teams in it and Ireland are not. Perhaps a pondering of just how far down the pecking order of world football we reside in light of that fact. Or it could be that the matches are on in the middle of the night and I’m currently possessed of neither the physical or mental fuel to endure that long.
Mind you, whatever about me not being massively enthused by the action in the three State solution (a bit ironic when you think the zombie with a skinned orange cat for a hairdo is so adamantly opposed to a two state solution where it really counts) it would appear some teams may be in a similar predicament. Either that or they’re being tactically conniving.
You might pinpoint England’s insipid effort against Ghana as an exhibit of same, but, my guess is that is just them at their flaky worst failing to get the job done as expected. Was it the Faroe Islands or San Marino or both previously? And yes I am acutely aware that the Rep. Of Ireland are in no position to throw stones at that glasshouse thanks to Macedonia and Lichtenstein.
However, in the case of Germany dropping points against Ecuador and the Americans likewise coming a cropper opposing Turkey absolutely would not have been in the script. Firstly because the Germans think they are the best and most efficient in the world at everything and secondly, the Yanks certainly wouldn’t want to muck up the script with them trying to sell to the world the idea that they are wonderful and worthy hosts and avid supporters and promoters of soccer.
Regardless of what anybody thinks, mind you, all and sundry may have to give way to the French connection
