Meath are on the lookout for a new Senior Hurling manager following yesterday’s (Tuesday) announcement that Raharney native Johnny Greville has decided not to continue in the role.
He came into the role having had a distinguished playing career with the Lake County and having garnered success on the sidelines with the maroon and white camogie team and several club sides including perennial Meath contenders Kildalkey.
Mind you, it’s that latter fact which would leave one pondering was all not as it appeared within the camp. Especially given that some of the county’s finest stickmen – including but not limited to – Cian Rogers, Nicky Potterton, Evan Fitzgerald, Sean Quigley, at least some of the McGowan brothers, Jacksie Regan and James Murray were all missing from county duty in 2026.
That should not, and certainly for this writer doesn’t, detract from those who did step up to the plate and prove themselves as having plenty to offer. In that bracket you could absolutely include players such as Gavin King, Daire and Tom Shine, Darren O’Higgins, Lorcan Byrne and Mark Leavy.
However, for Meath to realise their full potential and therefore be hurling at the level they should be more than capable of, they need every available resource pulling the same way. That can hardly be said to have been the case most recently given some of the absences alluded to above.
So I suppose the next question then becomes who are the likely candidates to assume Bainisteoir top. Ironically enough given some of those referenced above, I would have at least two pillars of the Kildalkey club close to the top of any shortlist.
Namely, Pat ‘Spuddy’ O’Halloran and/or Nick Fitzgerald. Though my dear friend Dave Clare would probably shudder at the thought of losing Spuddy from his backroom team with defending Keegan Cup holders Summerhill.
Also, and I tell this at my own expense, I knew there was another Kildalkey man whom had slipped my mind. That being Seanie ‘Crash’ Corrigan – current manager of the county U-20 team – with whom he made commendable progress.
Kiltale boss John Donoghue should also enter calculations, so too Ratoath coach Andy Dermody while, personally, I would love to see Trim’s John Andrews back involved.
Whomever the recruiters may be, we can but hope that everything is done to ensure that the right appointment is made to get everyone rowing in the same direction for the betterment of hurling in the county.
