Some desperately sad news emerging tonight – former Donegal footballer James McHugh has tragically lost his life in a road traffic accident in Co Cavan.
His wife Noreen has been airlifted to Beaumount Hospital in Dublin, such were/are the seriousness of her injuries. A third person involved in the collision was brought to a nearby hospital with what are thought to be less serious injuries.
Mr McHugh (62) – known affectionately as Wee James – joined his brother Mairtin Beag on the half forward line of the Donegal team which won the county’s first All Ireland SFC Final in 1992.
He also collected a National League souvenir, while helping his native Kilcar to two county SFC crowns in the North West.
And, while Martin of course managed Cavan to an Ulster title in 1997, James was also involved in the management of their club side.
James may not have had the same profile as his brother when their playing days ended, but, just as Martin’s lads, Mark* and Ryan carved out wonderful careers for themselves, James’s son Eoin has also represented the Tir Chonaill outfit with distinction at the highest level.
May James rest in peace.
*Mark McHugh managed Westmeath to just their second Leinster SFC title earlier this year.
