Here, the diminutive corner forward proved exactly why that is the case. When, just as in their opening round victory over Na Fianna, he finished the evening’s work with a dozen points to his name.

Some of which enabled those who last had Tom Keegan over for Christmas dinner back in 1962 hold a slender 0-10 to 1-05 lead as both teams galloped up the Simonstown steps out of the driving rain.

With the county corner forward and David Lernihan and Ciaran Caulfield and Eoin O’Connor in fine form they always seemed to have the Tara men at arm’s length.

However, just as in the aftermath of John Finnerty’s early goal, the blue and white clawed their way out of trouble and back to parity with scores from Darragh Campion and the introduced duo of Niall Finnerty and Oisin Keogh.

In the end, though, the chasers had given themselves too much ground to make up and it’s Ken Robinson’s troops who advance to the third last hurdle. What is certain, mind you, is that Aaron Lynch will require greater assistance if they are to progress still further.

There’s no doubt they have the resources to do so, but, having something and knowing how to get the best out of it are two entirely different things.
